Three Peaks of YorkshireAre you thinking about trying to climb Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough - the Three Peaks of Yorkshire - in 2010? The challenge in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales is often attempted for charity, or is used as a training event for the national Three Peaks.
Are you starting to plan your challenge for next year? Well, here's our top five links and info snippits to help you, and inspire you...- What time are you aiming for? Most people accept that the challenge should be completed in under 12 hours, and if you base your time on an average walking pace (including ascent times) then a time of around 10.5 hours can be achieved, although this does not allow for any comfort or food stops. However, the Three Peaks record is currently a little under 2.5 hours..! YES, people do run it...
- Do you use trekking poles? Hiking poles be be a great help on longer walks, and especially over steep climbs or long descents. But if you have never used poles before, they can cause all kinds of problems for you. Get some top advice before you go by reading this useful webpage from Plas-Y-Brenin.
- What about the weather? Will you need suntan lotion, sunglasses and lots of extra water to stop you from de-hydrating? Or will you need gloves, scarf, and extra warm clothing? Check the weather here before you go.
- Sure you know the route? Have a good read through the Three Peaks route before your challenge so you know what to expect... Sometimes it's not as obvious as you hoped it would be, and the map doesn't show everything. Don't get lost on the moss...
